History and Overview
The Oral Surgical Institute sponsored a postgraduate training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from 1986 to 2003. The program consisted of a twelve-month clinical fellowship in contemporary Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for board eligible oral and maxillofacial surgeons to enhance their clinical and practice management skills. Former fellows are now in both academic and private practice positions. The purpose of the fellowship was to provide advanced clinical training in this specialty, as well as an intense experience in practice management and contemporary health care trends.

Faculty
Jeffrey B. Carter, M.D., D.M.D., Program Director
Dr. Carter holds a degree in engineering from Tufts University, D.M.D. from the University of Connecticut, and an M.D. from Vanderbilt University. He has completed a one-year residency of general surgery at Vanderbilt University Hospital, as well as oral and maxillofacial training at Vanderbilt. From 1982 to 1986 he served as the head of the Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and the Director of Residency Education at the Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle Clinic. He is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at Vanderbilt University in the Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, and an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Tennessee Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
He serves as the Medical Director of the practice-based Oral Facial Surgery Center. He served as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery from 1993 through 1999.
