Introduction
The Oral Surgical Institute, Nashville, Tennessee, sponsors a 1-year internship in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The Oral Surgical Institute is a multi-location group practice of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Each year, in excess of 3,500 new surgical patients are seen, evaluated and treated for various surgical conditions.
Scope of Internship:
The emphasis of this program is to prepare recent dental graduates for the specialty in oral and maxillofacial surgery. A heavy emphasis will be placed on the clinical practice of the surgical subspecialty. The clinical program will consist of the following:
Ambulatory Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Education in ambulatory anesthesia
- Dentoalveolar surgery
- Pathology
- Preprosthetic surgery
- Implantology
- Major maxillofacial surgical procedures to include:
- Tramatology
- Orthognathic Surgery
- Temporomandibular Joint
- Contemporary OMFS practice management
- Medical information systems
- Introduction to computerized medical records
- Risk management
- Referral-base management
- Coding and nomenclature
- Oral and maxillofacial surgery quality assurance
- Interfacing with third parties payers
Surgical Practice in an Ambulatory Surgery Center:
- Pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery
- Pediatric dentistry
- Medically compromised patients
- Mentally and physically handicapped patients
Objectives:
The educational objectives of the program are to prepare the recent dental graduate with the clinical experience and background to matriculate in an oral and maxillofacial surgical residency the following year. The program is designed to give a one-on-one mentorship to an individual whose academic record shows promise for continuing their career in a surgical discipline.
Criteria for Acceptance:
- Completed application
- Two professional references
- License to practice dentistry in the State of Tennessee
- Current DEA active in the State of Tennessee
- Professional liability insurance for 12-months
Program Director:
Jeffrey B. Carter, M.D., D.M.D., holds a degree in engineering from Tufts University, a Doctor of Dental Medicine from University of Connecticut, and a Doctor of Medicine from Vanderbilt University. He completed training in general surgery at Vanderbilt University Hospital, as well as in oral and maxillofacial surgical residency at Vanderbilt. From 1980 to 1986, Dr. Carter served as head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Directory of Residency Education at Carle Roundation Hospital. From 1986 to current, he has practiced in Nashville where he conducted an oral and maxillofacial surgical fellowship from 1987 to 2003. Dr. Carter served as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from 1993 to 1999.
He maintains an active practice all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Middle Tennessee.
